Su obra se ha descrito como \u00abdelicada\u00bb e \u00ab\u00edntima\u00bb. Seg\u00fan sus propias palabras, era \u00abun hombre de pocas palabras y un m\u00fasico de pocas notas\u00bb. Mompou encontr\u00f3 en el verso de san Juan de la Cruz \u00abla m\u00fasica callada\u00bb una expresi\u00f3n de su ideal est\u00e9tico: \u00abuna m\u00fasica que sea la voz del silencio\u00bb, sin huecos ni adornos. Sus principales influencias fueron el impresionismo franc\u00e9s, as\u00ed como Erik Satie y muy especialmente Gabriel Faur\u00e9 y Francis Poulenc, lo que le dio un estilo en el que la expresi\u00f3n est\u00e1 concentrada en formas muy peque\u00f1as. En muchas de sus piezas, toma melod\u00edas del folklore catal\u00e1n, adapt\u00e1ndolas a su peculiar mundo sonoro.
